The city of Lyon is known for its hand puppets thanks to the famous Guignol de Lyon.
Guignol is a bit like the emblem of the city of Lyon. Guignol is the main character of the Lyonnais folklore puppet theater.
Its creator, Laurent Mourguet, a former canute who became a tooth-puller, brought it to life at the beginning of the 19th century in Lyon. We find his statue with that of Guignol, rue du Doyenné, in Old Lyon.
Guignol will become the spokesperson for the little people. It is also the worthy representative of the Lyonnais dialect. Other characters will follow: the Madelon, Gnafron, Toinon, the Gendarme, Canezou, the Bailli, Madame Quiquenet, the Thief...
