In 43 BC, the Roman governor Lucius Munatius Plancus founded a colony on the current hill of Fourvière, then called Lugdunum, that is to say "the hill of light", because it is directed towards the Is and refers to Lug, Celtic deity, personification of the astral light and the rising sun.
