Guignol hand puppets

Guignol is the symbol of Lyon. He is the main character of the Lyon traditional hand puppets theatre. 

Guignol was created at the beginning of the 19th century by Laurent Mourguet, a former “canut” (a silk worker from Lyon in the 19th century) who then became a tooth puller. His statue and Guignol’s are situated rue du Doyenné in the Vieux Lyon. 

Guignol became the spokesperson of poor people. He also is the rightful representative of the “parler Lyonnais” (the special way people from Lyon talk). Other characters followed, among them: la Madelon, Gnafron, Toinon, le Gendarme, Canezou, le Bailli, Madame Quiquenet, le Voleur …
