    Lyon city

We’re not saying Lyon’s the best city ever but close …

As we say here: “Tout le monde peuvent pas être de Lyon ! » (Not everybody has the chance to be born in Lyon), but everybody is certainly most welcomed!

    The 1001 assets of Lyon:

After being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 and elected best week-end destination by the World Travel Awards in 2016, Lyon has just been elected 2nd most beautiful city in the world after Kyoto by the American magazine Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice. Here’s something the citizens of Lyon can be proud of and something that will make the whole world want to come and see the City of Lights, also called the capital city of gastronomy.

    Why come to Lyon?

For its historical and architectural heritage:

2,000 years ago, Lugdunum (the latin name of Lyon) already existed where the Vieux-Lyon and the hill of Fourvière stand today. The living proof of this past is the Roman amphitheatre which, to this day, hosts various cultural events such as Les Nuits de Fourvière (a music festival which takes place ever year in summer). With its sumptuous façades and the impressive Saint Jean Baptiste cathedral, the Vieux-Lyon is based on Gothic architecture and Renaissance style. Across the Saône river, the Haussmann’s style rules over the Presqu’île (the peninsula which stretches from the foot of the Croix Rousse hill to the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône rivers). But if you have a knack for modern architecture, try and go to the district the residents call “Confluence”. It is absolutely unique, futuristic and eco-friendly.

      For its gastronomy:

Lyon’s cuisine is the legacy of the “Mères Lyonnaises” (the Mothers of Lyon, the female cooks who gave birth to the city’s famous reputation in terms of gastronomy). And of course, the world symbol of Lyon’s gastronomy is Paul Bocuse. You have probably already heard of the “Sirha”, an event which takes place in Lyon and during which the Bocuses d’Or trophies are awarded. If you want to honour this cuisine, you can go to a traditional “bouchon” (Lyon’s traditional restaurants) where you will discover what the Lyon gastronomy is all about!

      For its museums:

There are over 40 museums scattered all over Lyon and its region. In the Office du Tourisme, place Bellecour, you’ll find “passes” which will allow you to benefit from attractive rates. You can even visit them for free on every first Sunday of the month!

      For its notion of easy-living:

Lyon is a city where you can easily stroll. Its human size makes it easier around on foot or by bike. The several bicycle paths and pedestrian areas such as the Vieux Lyon make it easy to wander around with your whole family. The numerous parks like the Tête d’Or, and the riverbanks are the perfect spots to relax.
